Jefferson 500

Well – we’re back from the Jefferson 500.

The weekend’s weather began as perfectly as it possibly could. Upon arrival on Wednesday afternoon, the VRG had reserved us a nice, paved paddock area into which we were able to squeeze seven cars/rigs; the facility was almost full, with nearly 300 entries. Sasco, Apex and Powerslide were parked nearby, so most of the S2 runners were grouped near each other, enhancing the weekend’s camaraderie.

Thursday’s test day dawned with more fantastic weather, enabling everyone to ‘knock the rust off’ from winter’s rest.

Friday was, again, a magnificent day. VRG sent us out for qualifying with a smattering of Lotus and Ginetta racers, which wasn’t too satisfactory for either us or them. After the session, we were granted our own group for the remainder of the weekend, along with two Chevrons and the Matich CanAm car. Ben Sinnott, our perennial S2-class-and-overall FTD led the way, with Peter Krause running his quickest lap of the weekend to lead the HS2 runners, and Brent Gernert heading up the VS2 class. We were able to welcome several new members: Nick Incantalupo with the ex-Porter Swift and Phil Meany with a Shrike! We also met future members Rasim Tugberk with a Carbir and Greg Miller with a Swift. All four have extensive track experience in other forms of racing. Jack Freehoff and Denny Gernert debuted their newly-finished March HS2 car, getting up to pace in short order.

Friday afternoon’s race saw Ben lead the way, Brent Gernert finishing third and leading the VS2 class and Jack Freehoff eighth OA and first HS2 car, with his quickest lap of the weekend. Friday’s late afternoon was reserved for our customary social hour, with delicious fare prepared by Caryl Hanna and sponsor drawings.

Saturday brought us another beautiful day, albeit with rain in the forecast for later. Race #1 featured Ben running his quickest lap of the weekend, a blazing 1:12.882, to lead the field. Krause finished third OA and led HS2, while Pete Gates brought it home fourth OA and first VS2 car with his quickest lap of the weekend. Saturday’s second race saw some guys take a break in anticipation of our ‘S2 Feature’ which was scheduled for late afternoon. Once again, Ben led the way with Bryan Gernert second and the lead VS2 car, recording his best lap of the weekend, and John Galson scoring top HS2 honors.

So, at about 4:00, the S2 pack headed to the grid for our Feature: points, medals, race queens, etc. up for grabs. Moments before the pace car was to lead us from pit lane, the lightning, thunder and deluge began and the day’s racing was over; guess we’ll try again tomorrow! Saturday night’s J500 dinner, featuring Brian Redman was relocated from the Carousel circus tent to the paddock due to ankle-deep water in the tent. The VRG did a nice job under really tough circumstances, and a good time was had by all.

Sunday saw several cometitors leave for travel or family reasons, but the final race, our S2 Feature, ran with ten finishers. Ben batted 1.000 for the weekend: first overall and S2 winner. Bryan Gernert finished second and took the VS2 gold medal, and Peter Krause led the HS2 cars home after doing the same at VIR to open the season.

This year’s Jefferson 500 was another great VS2NA weekend blessed with (mostly) great weather, great friends, and great racing. We had a concurrent event at Road America for a combined entry of 40 Sports 2000’s racing this weekend! Our next event is at MidOhio; plan to be there for what’s always a fantastic S2 weekend at a beautiful and famous facility.

Summit Point

VRG Summit Point, May 2017

The Jefferson 500 at Summit Point was run in its usual first rate manner by the VRG. Ben Sinnott goes faster every year, but Brent Gernert is determined to catch up. They finished #1 and #2 on Saturday and Sunday.

Rodney Kendall’s car looked and ran better than ever after recovering from last years “mishap” at VIR. Simon Green was slowed by a misbehaving motor, and Bryan Gernert was fast after missing practice and qualifying.

The only incident of the weekend was when David Hughes lost a wheel in practice. Otherwise the racing was clean and everyone loaded their cars intact for the ride home.
